The on-board unit (OBU) is a device that is installed in trucks to enable automatic billing in a toll collection or tolling system.OBU technology is based on a combination of mobile communications (GSM) and satellite positioning (GNSS). The devices continuously receive signals from several satellites and use them to determine the position of the vehicles in the toll road network.
Additional functions of the OBU:
Vehicle tracking: The OBU uses GPS to determine the vehicle's position in real time. This enables precise tracking of the route and helps to optimize transport routes.
Telematics services: The OBU can send data about the vehicle's condition, such as fuel consumption, engine performance and maintenance requirements, to fleet management. This supports the efficient management and maintenance of the vehicle fleet.
Communication: The OBU can communicate with other intelligent transportation systems to receive information about traffic conditions, road closures and alternative routes.
Safety functions: Some OBUs are equipped with emergency functions that can automatically call for help in the event of an accident .
