Yard Management

Yard Management

Definition:

Yard Management includes the planning, control and optimization of all movements and processes at a company's factory or depot — i.e. in the area between the factory gate and loading dock.
It forms the interface between transport and warehouse logistics and ensures that trucks, trailers, containers, drivers, equipment and resources are coordinated efficiently.

The central goals are reduced waiting times, high ramp efficiency, real-time transparency and secure, structured processes.

Typical tasks in yard management:

  • Time slot and slot management for arrival & check-in
  • Allocation & control of gates (docks)
  • Organization of waiting areas for trucks & trailers
  • Check-in/check-out of vehicles & documents
  • Traffic management & safety control on the farm
  • Integration with warehouse, TMS and telematics systems

Yard management is often carried out by a Yard Management System (YMS) digitally supported.

Relation to industrial parks & chemical plants
In industrial and chemical plants, yard management also includes security briefings, document checks, PPE requirements and hazardous substance processes.

Connection to ETA and telematics
Modern YMS integrate real-time ETA and GPS data for dynamic ramp control.

Yard Management Challenges:

Information gaps on location and security requirements
Drivers are often unaware of the location's entrances, check-in processes, PPE requirements or document requirements. This leads to traffic jams, uncertainty and avoidable waiting times.

Lack of data harmonization between TMS, telematics and YMS
Disconnected systems (TMS, ETA, gate systems) make consistent control difficult. Media disruptions cause waiting times and inefficient yard utilization.

Loady's solution:

Uniform and verified location information for arrival & yard processes
Loady provides detailed, standardized and multilingual information for drivers, including:

  • GPS navigation to gates & specific charging points
  • PPE and safety requirements
  • Document requirements & check-in requirements
  • Slot information & gate process instructions
  • Route on the factory premises & waiting areas

Digital driver guidance via QR code & system integration
Using QR codes or integrations with TMS/telematics, drivers receive step-by-step instructions in their language — before and during yard processing.
This reduces inquiries, improves safety and shortens stay times.
