Yard management, is a term used in logistics and describes the measures and methods used to organize the processes and procedures in front of the loading ramp, i.e. in the area where trucks arrive, wait, drive, etc. Yard management closes the gap between transport logistics and warehouse logistics and attempts to organize processes in a time- and cost-saving manner.
The activity is divided into
- Management of time slots for the arrival of trucks and the start of unloading and loading processes
- Monitoring and controlling the processes for incoming and outgoing goods.
- Management of the gates (docks) and
- waiting areas for trucks and trailers (yard)
The objectives are
- optimized logistics processes
- Increased efficiency during loading and unloading
- Reduction of truck waiting times on the factory premises and saving of the associated space
- Real-time data on the processes
These goals are shared by the yard operators and the carriers. Ideally, the yard operator gets by with less space, which he can either use for other purposes or release from use. The carrier can optimize the use of the truck and the working hours of the drivers.
